How Do Arts and Culture Impact Michigan?

The Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL), in partnership with various cultural stakeholders, is actively engaged in cultural economic development. As a means of evaluating its cultural economic development accomplishments and the performance of Michigan's cultural sector, HAL and Michigan State University (MSU) are spearheading the development of a Cultural Economic Development Tool (CEDOT), the first online system of its kind in the nation.

Although Michigan's cultural sector is a key economic driver, it lacks an accessible, uniform, scientific-based method for collecting, measuring, managing, analyzing and reporting data related to its market and non-market value(s). This makes it difficult to affirm and articulate: (1) the cultural sector's value to different stakeholders, including elected officials; (2) the cultural sector's capacity to contribute to community and economic development; and (3) the contribution of HAL's cultural economic development strategy. The cultural sector does not have access to current information about the size of the cultural market or the preferences and behaviors of cultural consumers, including cultural tourists, and there is no information to reliably assess the performance of the sector in terms of income and market share or the well-being of organizations and creators.

How Can You Contribute?

A very important part of CEDOT is the recruitment of eight online panels of voluntary respondents from Michigan's cultural sector. Those panels include: (1) Artists, (2) Arts Education Organizations, (3) Distributors/Retailers (of visual arts), (4) Fair & Festival Producers, (5) Historic Preservation, (6) Libraries, (7) Library Users, and (8) (other arts) Organizations. Once the panels have been recruited, the panelists will be contacted periodically with online surveys requesting current information about their markets, suppliers, and other critical factors, thereby enabling HAL to monitor the performance of the cultural sector in Michigan.

Signing up to participate in one or more of the CEDOT panels is how you can help. Your participation, along with the participation of others, is crucial to the ability to measure the value of Michigan's cultural sector and to demonstrate that value to policymakers in the state.

Registering for a CEDOT Panel

Participation on a panel is voluntary. There is no cost to you to participate, only the time needed to register for a panel and to respond to future online surveys. Your privacy will be protected to the maximum extent allowable by law, and your email address and other contact information will not be distributed to any individual, organization, or company. You may withdraw from a panel at any time, and you do not have to answer particular questions on the registration form on or any of the panel surveys.

If you have any questions about CEDOT or the online panels, feel free to contact the research team (Ed Mahoney or Lori Langone) at MSU by email at rirc@msu.edu or by calling 517.432.0292.

Following is a brief description about each of the panels and the types of organizations and individuals who should register for each of them, as well as links to the websites for each of the panel registration questionnaires.
